The Crystal Maze Live Experience is the ultimate throwback to the 90’s. I’m a 1993 baby and struggled to remember much about the show beforehand. Strangely, when I entered the maze I felt a wave of nostalgia instantly came flooding back. And let me tell you, it was brilliant.
What is The Crystal Maze?
For those of you who don’t remember much about the Crystal Maze, here’s a quick refresher.
So, the Crystal Maze was a Channel 4 game show, aired between 1990-1995 and is split into five zones; Aztec, Medieval, Industrial,Futuristic and, of course, The Crystal Dome.
A group was taken around each zone facing a series of challenges on the way. The challenges fall into one of four categories; skill, mental, physical or mystery and for every challenge successfully completed, a crystal is won for the team.
Take too long, and that member of the team was locked in the room, and out of the game.
The Crystal Maze Live Experience, Manchester
The Crystal Maze Manchester is located in the Old Granada Studios, sitting right between the old corrie set and The Museum of Science and Industry.
Surprisingly, the live experience is exactly like the show. The games, the design of each zone, the tension when trying to beat the clock: and of course, The Crystal Dome. It was so surreal.
Do you Actually Get Locked into the Games?
Thankfully not. What happens is, if you run out of time completing any of the challenges, you’ll be locked out of the game, but don’t worry, you won’t be locked in the room for the duration.
To re-enter the game, you’ll be asked to do a funny forfeit, and the game continues.
Is the Crystal Maze Difficult?
This one depends on the game you’re playing. I’d say the games are mixed ability where a game which might have confused the hell out of me, proved really simple to team mates, and vice versa.
What to Expect at The Crystal Maze in Manchester?
Without giving too much away, there’s a few quirky touches I absolutely loved:
1. The Presenter
Before entering the maze, we were met with our spicy presenter, Ms Melanie C- a-maze-ing touch for the whole 90s theme.
Like many 23-year olds, I’ve not been on a slide in years. So, when I stood looking over the brightly lit Aztec zone, my inner child screamed at the sight of a bright yellow slide (that my backside actually fit in!).
3.The Lazer Room
I’m definitely not agile enough to face this challenge, but it was so much fun to watch. I forgot this challenge existed until I was there!
The Crystal Dome: Be Tactical
Ok so I’m going to give you some techniques for the dome, and bear in mind, this is a do as I say, not as I do tip. The trick to the dome is to create a human shield against the glass of the dome and collect as many golden tickets as possible.
My technique was the complete opposite. I stood around trying to catch flying pieces of weightless gold foil out of thin air. Yes, common sense isn’t so common right?
The Crystal Maze Live Experience, Manchester is so much fun. It’s definitely worth the trip!
